What I Learned About Teaching

This is for any kind of teacher, dance or otherwise. Even if you do not consider yourself a teacher.  If you give it some thought you may find that you are more of a teacher than you realize. Below are two TED videos from Sir Ken Robinson on problems with education.

The take home message of these videos is that each student is different. As a teacher it is our job to care enough about our students to look beyond what we’re teaching to what they want to learn. Especially in dance, we need to empower creativity. Though technique is important, I feel that often some very creative and wonderful people are pushed away from dance because they do not have the great technique or the ideal body type. Dance is about passion! Teach passion and show passion, the rest will usually take care of itself.
